Patrick McMahon
Elected 2005
Pat joined the Association in 1968 after rupturing his spleen playing for Western Suburbs. After umpiring in the NSWAFL from 1968 to 1972, Pat's job was transferred to Albury, where umpired over 170 games throughout the Riverina from 1972 to 1977. This included over 120 senior games, and saw Pat
appointed to the position of Umpires Advisor with the Albury Umpires League.
Pat was appointed to officiate in the first ever night game at the (then newly completed) Lavington Sports Complex. The match was an Ovens and Murray senior game, which was usually only umpired by members of the VFL senior panel. He also
umpired the grand final of the Ovens and Murray pre-season competition between North Albury and Wodonga in 1976, plus many other grand finals in the Ovens and Murray, Hume, Tallangatta, Coreen and Upper Murray Leagues.
Pat returned to Sydney with his employment, and again served the NSWAFUA from 1978 to 1985. During his time with the NSWAFUA he officiated in over 140 senior games. He umpired in numerous grand finals, as well as an interstate fixture between NSW and Tasmania. Pat's hard work and dedication culminated in the senior grand final with Mark Rendell in 1980, which was televised on Channel 7 (with commentary by Bob Skilton). |
