Peter Nilson – Game Milestone

The AFL Sydney Umpires Group is proud to acknowledge the wonderful achievement of goal umpire – Peter Nilson – who this week officiates in his 500th AFL Sydney Competition match.

Peter’s umpiring career actually begun as a Soccer Referee before he made the move to AFL as a club umpire at Easts where his son played as a junior.

After a few seasons at Easts, he joined the Sydney Umpiring Group in 1992 and he has umpired every year since.

The journey from club umpiring to a regular appointment to Premier Division matches was not an easy one and like most umpires Peter officiated in many Division One and Premier Division Reserves matches before his first Premier Division Senior match.

One of Peter’s most influential peers, mentor and coach has been Ken Ray who speaks fondly of Peter’s development and says he “has come a long way” since his early years as an umpire.

Ken also mentioned that once Peter made the decision to commit himself to a stricter and more disciplined approach to his umpiring he “improved out of sight” and has grown to become an important member of the goal umpiring group.

As well as being a stalwart of the umpiring community, Peter is a well liked and respected member of the umpiring community and always keen to pass on some advice, tell you a story or shake your hand asking “how are you mate?”.

Peter acknowledges the support and advice of many of his fellow umpires but in particular he spoke of Ken Ray’s encouragement and guidance and said that Ken “got me to where I am today”.

Peter’s advice to young umpires is to “don’t let the players get to you” and “be strong, and have conviction in your decision”.

There have been a number of highlights in Peter’s career but his first Premier Division match at Olds Park is a stand out.

Congratulations Peter from all your umpiring friends and we wish you well this week and for many more matches into the future.

Frank Kalayzich – Field Umpire Games Record

There is a famous statement that – records are made to be broken – and this week, the AFL Sydney Umpires Group has a significant record that will be broken by field umpire Frank Kalayzich.

When officiating this week’s Premier Division Game between UTS and Sydney University at Trumper Park, Frank will surpass Mark Rendell’s record and become the field umpire who has officiated the most Senior Premier Division Games in the AFL Sydney Competition.

Frank began his umpiring journey in 1978 in the Manly-Warringah Junior Football competition and he has umpires every year since (excluding 2001) but it was in 1983 that he umpired his first senior game with has first First Grade Game in 1986.

The umpiring road has not always been easy and Frank almost gave up umpiring after only his first senior game, after he was threatened by a player who then put his hands around Frank’s neck in a choking action, all in response to decision made during the game.

If it wasn’t for the on-going support, encouragement and advice from others in the umpiring community, Frank may have pursued other sports, but he stuck with it and we are all pleased he did.

Frank’s career has included umpiring AFL under 19 games and VFL/AFL Reserves Games and he has umpired with some of our games most successful including John Russo and Hayden Kennedy as well as many other who have been and are currently on the AFL Umpires List including Troy Pannell and Ray Chamberlain.

The success that Frank has enjoyed has been hard fought and like most umpires Frank has enjoyed the support of a number people both from his family and the umpiring community.

Frank acknowledges a couple of key umpiring coaches for his longevity including David Levens who’s “insightfulness advice” Frank says “laid the foundations of the umpire he is today”.

Frank also acknowledges Mark Rendell as a significant source of encouragement, support and advice in addition to a number of coaches that he has had.

This wonderful milestone has been achieved in part by maintaining a level of commitment in many areas including fitness and in Frank’s words having a “belief the he is contributing to something that he loves”.

Mark Rendell takes this a step further by commenting that “in part, your participation is not at all surprising; you are a natural athlete of considerable endurance. Your umpiring has always been with respect, integrity and honesty. Players/umpires, past and present, officials and supporters of this great game admire and recommend your professionalism and endeavour”.

As well as being a stalwart of the umpiring community, Frank also works with others in the umpiring community and his advice to younger umpires is to “be true and committed to themselves and don’t take short-cuts”.

There have been a number of highlights in Frank’s career “too many to mention” Frank says but two stand out: his first senior game at Trumper Park and officiating his first Grand Final in 1987.

Frank has also officiated a number of games at the Sydney Cricket Ground and acknowledges this as his favourite ground.

The speed, complexity and rules of our great game have also changed over the years and Frank suggests the following changes have enhanced the Sydney competition: the change from a fifteen metre to a fifty metre penalty and the introduction of the three umpire system.

As Frank has contributed so much, over such an extended period to umpiring in the Sydney competition, it is impossible to note the achievements and list all the accolades.  Perhaps the final word should go to Mark Rendell who says “you are a legend worthy of great praise and I congratulate your wonderful contributions”.

The AFL Sydney Umpire Group congratulates Frank on his wonderful achievement and wishes him well in his record breaking game and for many into the future.

Congratulations Ken Ray! 417 AFL Sydney Premier Division Senior Grade Matches

The AFL Sydney Umpires Association/NSWAFUA and many throughout the entire football community this weekend join to celebrate in congratulating Ken Ray on his record breaking 417th AFL Sydney Premier Division Senior Grade Match this Friday Night/ Saturday, where he will step out to officiate in the match between Western Suburbs and North Shore at Picken Oval. Ken now becomes the record holder of umpiring the most AFL Sydney Premier Division Senior Grade Matches in the history of umpiring in New South Wales.

Umpire of the ’94, ’96, ’98, ’99, ’03 and ’05 AFL Sydney Premier Division Senior Grade Grand Finals and being the Association’s best goal umpire on 3 individual occasions in 1990, 1996 and 2003 he has also spent the majority of his umpiring career having been appointed by the Umpiring department as the best person to also coach, guide and mentor the Sydney goal umpiring group having been asked to take on the role as the AFL Sydney Goal Umpires coach a postion he has performed apart from a year or two here and there since 1993.

Ken’s talents not only on field as a technically gifted and sound goal umpire in his own right but to mentor and coach aspiring Sydney and National AFL goal umpires is held in the utmost regard and respect throughout the entire umpiring community not only in Sydney but also nationally across Australia having also mentored AFL listed goal umpires from other states around the country past and present.

Ken has coached and mentored well over one hundred aspiring goal umpires throughout the state of New South Wales with a number who have reached the pinnacle of umpiring, umpiring like Ken has done at the National AFL Level.

In only his second full season of goal umpiring Ken was appointed to the AFL Goal Umpires Panel in 1990. Also having taken on the role as Sydney Goal Umpires Coach in 1993 as well as being one of the best goal umpires umpiring Senior football in the Sydney Premier Division on top of umpiring over 60 AFL Reserve and Under 19 Football during the years, it was in 1999 that Ken made his AFL Senior Umpiring debut at the SCG between the Sydney Swans and North Melbourne. Then after 11 seasons on the AFL Goal Umpiring Panel, the AFL Umpiring Department then in 2001 appointed Ken as AFL Goal Umpires Coach and Observer for AFL matches played throughout NSW/ACT, a role he performed for over a decade until the completion of the 2010 AFL season.

AFL football in Sydney, New South Wales and nationally across Australia is greater for having Ken been part of our great game. Not only do we goal umpires in Sydney Umpiring partake in the technical drills and theory lessons that he has uniquely created and prepared us, Ken has also lent his expertise to many goal umpiring coaches across the country, where he has shared his drills and theory lessons he has created without any fanfare nationally to the greater umpiring community. Original coaching drills and articles by Ken have been published and have been made accessible to all on the umpiring coaching section of the official AFL website and AFL affiliated websites throughout the years.

We thank and congratulate Ken Ray, Life Member of our Association and celebrate with him on his wonderful achievement and wish him all the very best for his match and with no signs of slowing down yet and still continuing to be one of our best goal umpires wish him all the very best for the many more to come yet.
